Pixar are returning to making original properties rather than prequels or sequels. There first venture back into this realm will be
Onward: an upcoming epic starring Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer.
Pixar recently shared some stills from the 2020 film with
People. These are our first official look at Onward, until now we only knew its cast, title, and general premise. Dan Scanlon will be returning to Pixar, after directing
Monsters University, to helm
Onward.
Holland and Pratt will be playing two elvish brothers by the name of Ian and Barley respectively. Loius-Dreyfus will also be returning to Pixar, after voicing Princess Atta in
A Bug's Life, as the former elf's mother. All three of these characters feature in the newly released stills, however, Spencer's role is still a mystery at the moment.
Check out the stills below:
Scanlon discussed Holland and Pratt's roles, explaining why they were perfect for each of them.
“Tom Holland is perfect for our character of Ian, the younger brother. We were looking for someone who could have this shy quality and someone who is good at being a little awkward. And Tom is great at that! And yet has a genuine sweetness to him that you really root for him.”
And on Pratt's character:
“We wanted someone who was the exact opposite of that. Someone who could be wild and chaotic and out of control, but in a very charming and infectious way. And Chris Pratt is perfect for that. He has this ability to be both sort of wild and out of control but in a really lovable, fun, infectious way.”
The pair of
Avengers stars apparently did their voice-work together, Scanlon revealed.
“They are clearly friends. They’ve worked together before and hung out together. It was fun to sit back and watch them make each other laugh.”
Scanlon also explained his hopes for the film, which basically revolve around audiences feeling affected by it. “I absolutely hope that people are laughing their heads off and crying their eyes out. My hope is some of the questions that I’m asking in the film will be questions other people are asking about their own lives. And I think that’s what a lot of the times gets us to connect to a movie.”
Onward is set to release on March 6th, 2020.
