Many a theatrical release has been delayed on account of the Coronavirus. Mulan would've arrived in theatres in just a week from now but no longer — more on that here. Peter Rabbit 2 was set to arrive in theatres on April 3rd but will now on August 7th — more on that here. Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't yet arrived in Japan nor China due to Coronavirus concerns — more on that here.
There are many examples that span beyond the realm of animation — such as Marvel's Black Widow. Fast & Furious 9 (A.K.A. F9) isn't the only movie that Universal Pictures has had to delay. It has been announced that Minions: The Rise of Gru will no longer arrive in theatres on July 3rd.
Illumination is temporarily closing up shop in France on account of the Coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, the post-production process could simply not be finished for Minions: The Rise of Gru. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri provided a statement on the matter — which you can read below (via The Hollywood Reporter):
In response to the severity of the situation in France, we are temporarily closing our Illumination Mac Guff studio in Paris.
With this decision we are abiding by the French Government’s guidelines and doing everything possible to slow the spread of the virus as we care for our artists and their families. This means we will be unable to finish Missions: The Rise of Gru in time for our planned global releases in late June and early July.
While we all grapple with the enormity of this crisis, we must put the safety and protection of our employees above all. We look forward to finding a new release date for the return of Gru and the Minions.
Minions: The Rise of Gru has been delayed indefinitely. This means that, while it has vacated its former one, a new release date hasn't yet been disclosed. It remains to be seen whether other planned releases for July will be affected — such as Disney's Jungle Cruise. We will be sure to keep you in the know.
When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar® winner Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
