Most fans of The Incredibles thought too much time had passed for a sequel while others were adamant that a sequel would show that the same amount of time that had passed in the real-life would also have passed in the Pixar animated world. That is, a sequel would should adult versions of Dash and Violet, perhaps with families of their own.
However, as the first banner for the sequel revealed at last year's D23 Expo, the Incredibles 2 will be picking up from the exact moment that the original film ended. Speaking on this decision, director Brad Bird told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted to keep the focus on this particular family dynamic and not one that deals with young adulthood or being a grandparent.
"To me, that’s a much more common idea, and I think that part of the intent of The Incredibles is to capture people and how their powers connected with the way they are at a certain age and their roles in the family. That was actually kind of the ‘Aha!’ idea for me when I thought of the original film."
He explained further that each character's abilities comes from where they're currently at in their life - men are supposed to be strong, moms are pulled in a million different directions, teenage girls are shy and defensive and 10-year-olds are balls of energy. So if you aged the characters up, their powers no longer have that deeper meaning.
"Animation does not have to observe linear time the way live-action films do," Bird added. He continued, "As long as people’s voices are the same, the characters don’t need to age. I mean, just ask the people on The Simpsons. You can do it in animation, just as long as the voices don’t sound older.”
The Incredibles 2 opens in theaters on June 15, 2018.
