Unexpectedly, former Hollywood trade reporter Jeff Sneider, has revealed that DC Studios is producing an animated film based on the Jurassic League.
The script is reportedly being written by Brian Lynch (Minions, Puss in Boots), with James Gunn serving as the film's producer.
Co-writers Daniel Warren Johnson and Juan Gedeon (Gedeon also illustrated the book) came up with the concept for the Jurassic League in 2022. The dinosaur superheroes debuted in a six-issue miniseries published monthly from May through October.
The official synopsis for the hardcover that collects all six issues reads, "You know the story: an infant escapes a far-off planet before it explodes and is deposited on Earth to be raised by human parents. A goddess from a lost city defends truth. A Tyrannosaurus rex dons the visage of a bat to strike fear into evildoers’ hearts. This heroic trinity, alongside a league of other super-powered dinosaurs, join forces to save a prehistoric Earth from the sinister machinations of Darkseid.
Wait…what? Okay, maybe you don’t know the story. So join us and bear witness to a brand-new—yet older than time—adventure and experience the Justice League as you have never seen them before!"
It was recently announced that the team would be returning as a back-up story in the pages of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, starting with the 13th issue, which hits comic book stores on May 28.
As implied by the group's name, the comic centers on a group of prehistoric superheroes that serve as the Justice League's parallel counterparts in an alternate reality, designated Earth-27.
The members of the team are Wonderdon, a Triceratops warrior princess from Amazonia who resembles Wonder Woman, Batsaur, an Allosaurus that is a pastiche of Batman and battles crime at night, and the Superman-like Brachiosaurus- Supersaur, the last dinosaur of his kind. Aquanyx (Aquaman), Flashraptor (Flash), and Green Torch (Green Lantern) also eventually join the dinosaur-themed Trinity.
While we wait for Warner Bros. or James Gunn to confirm, fans are speculating as to whether this animated film will be an Elseworlds offshoot or part of the DCU canon. Another question that fans have is whether this movie is being made for Max or if it will be released in theaters.
While Gunn previously stated that he wants the DCU to be comprised of film, television, video games and animation projects (see Creature Commandos) it's hard to see how an anthropomorphic take on the Justice League factors into the current Gods and Monsters lineup.
