Game of Thrones actor Joel Fry has reportedly been cast in
Cruella, Disney's live-action origin story based on the classic
101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil.
Fry is set to play Jasper, one of the bumbling henchmen who help Cruella in capturing the puppies. He will star opposite
Paul Walter Hauser, who will play his partner in crime Horace. Emma Stone
will play the titular villain, Cruella de Vil. Emma Thompson
also has a role in the film.
Cruella is being directed by Craig Gillespie (
I, Tonya), with a script penned by Tony McNamara. It is slated to hit theaters on December 23, 2020.
Cruella is one of two live-action remakes Disney has planned for 2020 - the other being
Mulan (March 2020).
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the live-action sequel about the iconic
Sleeping Beauty villain, will hit theaters October of this year. A live-action
Lady and the Tramp movie will release on Disney+ in November.
The live-action remakes have been a mixed bag for Disney. While
Dumbo disappointed, both
Aladdin and
The Lion King have topped $1 billion at the global box office. Jon Favreau's
The Lion King ($1.2B) is actually the second highest-grossing film of 2019, behind only
Avengers: Endgame.
As for Fry, he played Hizdahr zo Loraq, the slave trader from Meereen, in HBO's
Game of Thrones. He also had roles in
Paddington 2 and
Benjamin.
