Over the holidays, Warner Bros. announced release dates for three upcoming films, including Dave Green's animated hybrid Coyote vs. Acme. Interestingly, Warner Bros. is targeting a theatrical release for the film on July 21, 2023.
The theatrical premiere is a reversal from Warner Bros.' current plans for 2021 movies, which currently drop simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. Perhaps the studio is thinking we'll be well beyond the pandemic and that movie theaters will have returned to normal in 2023.
Coyote vs. Acme was first talked in 2018 but very little has been shared since. As the name suggests, the film will follow Wile E. Coyote as he goes up against Acme Corporation, the fictitious Looney Tunes mail-order supplier that often provides him with the equipment and explosives needed to catch the Roadrunner. Anyone familiar with the popular rivalry is well aware of how these items typically backfire in Wile E. Coyote's face. Clearly fed up with the inadequacies of Acme, it appears Wile E. will finally search for some payback. It's unclear if Roadrunner will make an appearance.
Sibling writers Jon and Josh Silberman (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are penning the screenplay and, according to Deadline, James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad) is also contributing the screenplay. Gunn is also on board as producer alongside former DreamWorks Animation boss and Tom & Jerry producer Chris DeFaria.
