While
Detective Pikachu is now out in theatres and proving to be a success, this won't be the case for the upcoming
Sonic the Hedeghog movie (according to box office analysts). The
Sonic the Hedgehog movie's very first trailer proved to be a travesty, having amassed 654k dislikes at the time of writing this.
The negative reaction to the film's trailer will prove detrimental to the film istelf according to these analysts. Jeff Bock, of Exhibitor Relations, explained that
Sonic reminds audiences of every other terrible video game movie that has been and gone - referencing the first trailer:
“Sonic reminds you of all the bad video game adaptations that have been put out. The fact that they got it all wrong here on their first swing is a bad sign.”
Bock mentioned that
"It doesn’t seem like the people that made this really understand or love the property," which is one of the reasons why
Detective Pikachu proved to be successful as, video essayist, Patrick H. Willems explains here:
"The amount of detail specific to the property that’s packed into every corner of the frame, it really feels like it’s made by people who love Pokémon…which hardcore fans will appreciate."
An editor for BoxOfficeGuru, Gitesh Pandya, concurred with this statement. Pandya first mentioned that “Jim Carrey is not the box office powerhouse he used to be," before bringing up another positive aspect of Detective Pikachu which can't be said about Sonic the Hedgehog:
"It seems like they have the world of Pokémon and are telling a story within that world, rather than trying to take the structure of a video game and applying it to a two hour film."
