According to a recent report over at The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), Amazon is going to be working on a new Voltron movie. Not only that, but it sounds like they will be forgoing a theatrical release and sending the film straight to streaming.
That's not the end of the world, of course, but fans may be disappointed to learn that Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber is attached to take the helm of this Voltron movie.
According to the report Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber will be helming the film. Thurber, whose other credits include Central Intelligence and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, apparently came up with the story and will co-write the script alongside Ellen Shanman (The Hidden Girl). While Red Notice was a hit for Netflix, it didn't do so well on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring a lowly 36%.
The first season was an adaptation of the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion. The second season was adapted from the unrelated anime series Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
While the 1984 and 1985 Voltron: Defender of the Universe never quite reached the same level of popularity as Transformers, it did well with critics and was the top-rated syndicated children's show for two years during its original run in 1984 and 1985. It spawned three follow-up series, several comic books, and as was especially popular in the 80s, a line of Voltron toys, all based upon the story of five young pilots who are part of a battalion named the Robot Lions, piloting vehicles that join together to form a mega-robot known as Voltron. Netflix even rebooted the series in 2016 with their Voltron: Legendary Defender, which concluded with its final and eighth season in 2018.
