Universal and Dreamworks Animation have dated the sequel to The Bad Guys for an August 1, 2025 summer release.
Unlike the Netflix holiday special, which saw the main voice cast replaced, The Bad Guys 2 will see see Sam Rockwell return as Mr. Wolf, Marc Maron as Mr. Snake, Craig Robinson as Mr. Shark, Anthony Ramos as Mr. Piranha and Awkwafina as Ms. Tarantula, aka “Webs.”
Other members of the voice cast include Zazie Beetz as Diana Foxington, Richard Ayoade as Professor Marmalade, Alex Borstein as police chief Misty Luggins and Lilly Singh as Tiffany Fluffit.
The synopsis for the sequel reads, "The Bad Guys are struggling to find trust and acceptance in their newly minted lives as Good Guys, when they are pulled out of retirement and forced to do ‘one last job’ by an all-female squad of criminals."
Pierre Perifel returns to direct the sequel, where he gains a co-director in the form of JP Sans, who was head of character animation on the first film.
The first picture, released on April 22, 2022, was a surprising box office smash, generating $250 million worldwide on an estimated $60-80 million production budget.
In 2022, the picture placed fifth among the highest-grossing animated films of the year with another Universal film, Minions: The Rise of Gru taking the top slot, grossing $939.6 million globally.
The Bad Guys film is based on Australian writer and illustrator, Aaron Blabey's children's graphic novel series of the same name.
Blabey has written and drawn eighteen volumes, or "episodes," since the first was published in 2015. The Bad Guys: Episode 19: The Serpent and the Beast, the 19th episode, is scheduled for release on July 2, 2024.
