Is someone cutting onions in here? Nope, that's just Disney's animated Christmas advert tugging on my heartstrings. The House of Mouse is kicking off the holiday season with a heart-warming new short that is sure to bring a tear to your eye.
The new short focuses on the relationship between a Filipino grandmother, Lola (which also happens to be the Philippine Kinship term for grandmother) and her granddaughter. The story begins in the 1940s, as Lola, then a child, receives a plush Mickey Mouse toy for Christmas The story then jumps to 2005 and we see the grandmother share the doll as well as her love for crafting lanterns with her granddaughter.
Through a montage, we see the two form a special bond over their love of Disney and Christmas crafting. But as time passes, the yearly ritual begins to fade. Cue the tears. I won't spoil what happens next, but let's just say as a father of two, this advertisement hits hard.
While times change and people grow, beloved family traditions make lifelong memories that cross generations and hold us together, especially over the festive period. Lola and her granddaughter share a love of Disney and Christmas crafting, but over time their yearly ritual of making star lanterns begins to fade away. Looking back into Lola’s past and seeing her grandmother’s much-loved Mickey Mouse inspires her granddaughter to create a festive surprise that lights up her Christmas morning and renews their special bond. We hope you enjoy this special Christmas video, From Our Family To Yours.
With the global pandemic wreaking havoc upon the world, the holidays are certainly hitting differently this year. Disney's animated short is just one of many we advertisements we can expect to shed a tear to this year.
Beyond just wishing everyone happy holidays, the ad marks Disney's 40-year partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Disney is helping raise money for the charity foundation, selling the limited-edition Vintage Mickey Mouse Holiday Soft Toy at Disney Stores and online at shopDisney. For every Mickey plush sold between now and World Wish Day on April 29, 2021, 25% of the retail price will be donated to Make-A-Wish organizations to help grant wishes for children.
On a somewhat related Christmas note, CBS will be hosting all sorts of holiday classics this year. From Frosty the Snowman to Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, you can catch all the beloved Christmas classics on CBS starting on November 27.
