Contrary to rumors that Spider-Man: Freshman Year was canceled, it has now been confirmed that Polygon Pictures will be the studio producing the animated series.
A statement on the anime studio's website reads, "We hope you are looking forward to this return to the world of Spider-Man, utilizing the latest CG technology."
Polygon Pictures is known for its use of 3D animation and the statement above is a solid indication that they'll be using that particular animation style for Freshman Year.
On the anime side, Polygon is probably best known for the 3DCG Ajin film trilogy, along with Knights of Sidonia .
Western audiences might be more familiar with their work on Tron: Uprising, Star Wars Resistance, and Love, Death & Robots, Volume III - "The Very Pulse of the Machine".
Spider-Man: Freshman Year was first announced during Disney+ Day in November 2021 and a first-look at the series was unveiled during SDCC 2022.
Originally, the show was set to be connected to the MCU but that has since changed as the show will now explore a "What If...." concept which explores how Peter Parker's MCU origin could have gone very differently.
It's likely that the show takes place in an alternate Earth that is similar yet slightly different than the MCU's Earth 616 (or Earth-199999, depending on who you ask).
For instance, Freshman Year will see Norman Osborn show up to take Peter Parker under his wing instead of Tony Stark. Other characters set to appear alongside Peter Parker during his first year of high school include Harry Osborn (who is a football jock) and Amadeus Cho. Charlie Cox is also set to provide the voice of Daredevil.
