Reviews for Pixar's Luca have hit the web. With 82 reviews counted as of this writing, the soon-to-be-released film is officially certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 92% rating.
The critics consensus reads: "Slight but suffused with infectious joy, the beguiling Luca proves Pixar can play it safe while still charming audiences of all ages."
Luca takes viewers to a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera and follows a young boy named Luca Paguro in a coming-of-age story. Luca is a sea monster with the ability to transform into a human while on land. Along with his best friend Alberto Scorano, the two embark on a life-changing summer as they explore the town of Portorosso.
Luca has been hailed as an endearing and beautiful film, albeit a predictable tale that we've seen countless times before. It doesn't sound like the story is as deep as some of Disney's recent films, including Pixar's latest movie Soul, but most of the reviews praise its endearing nature and gorgeous animation. The general consensus seems to be Luca is a fine summer film with a decent lesson.
Even though COVID cases are trending downward and movie theaters are opening back up, Luca was one of the victims of the pandemic with Disney opting to bypass the big screen and send the movie straight to Disney+. Unlike some other films that release on the streaming service, Luca will not come with a Premier Access fee, meaning anyone who subscribes to Disney+ will be able to watch it for free.
Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film “Luca” is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.
Luca debuts on Disney+ this Friday, June 18.
