First announced last December, Lightyear is an upcoming spinoff of the beloved Toy Story franchise and if the name didn't already give it away, it focuses on the iconic Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear. Lightyear is actually an origin story for Buzz Lightyear -- not the toy, but the "real life" space pilot within the fictional Toy Story universe who actually inspired the creation of the action figure we've come to know.
In the first teaser trailer for Lightyear, we see Buzz soar to infinity. But the vast galaxy that awaits him appears filled with all sorts of threats and challenges he'll have to overcome. The trailer actually looks surprisingly adult-oriented. While there do appear to be a few slapstick moments, it looks like Lightyear will be a legitimate sci-fi space exploration movie.
Check out a brand-new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear,” an original feature film releasing June 17, 2022. The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy—introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.
As we already know, Buzz will be voiced by Chris Evans, perhaps better known these days as the original Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pixar veteran and Finding Dory co-director Angus MacLane is helming the film with Galyn Susman as producer.
The teaser says Lightyear is coming in Summer 2022, but the original announcement from last year had it blasting into theaters on June 17, 2022. Barring any setbacks, it looks like everything is on track.
