Earlier this week, news broke that Disney's DuckTales reboot will be ending after its third season. Given how well-received the series has been and that there had been no prior notice ahead of Season 3's premiere, the news that this would be the end shocked everyone.
The good news is series showrunners Matt Youngberg and Francisco Angones had written this season with the potential that it could be the end. In a joint statement posted to social media, the producers wrote:
We’ve always said that you have to go into every season of a show as if it’s your last, leave nothing on the table, and have faith that your team will eventually be able to top it. With that in mind, we crafted Season 3 of DuckTales as one focused on Legacy, on the future of the Duck Family, and what that means, tying into questions and mysteries that were set up way back in the very first episode of our show. So ultimately, we were prepared for this season to be our last.
While it's sad that DuckTales will be ending after its third season, it's comforting to know fans will get a satisfying conclusion. With the series consistently building upon itself every season with intriguing mysteries and storylines, it will all seemingly come to a head in the final half of Season 3, which even Disney says will be "an epic season finale."
DuckTales will return for its final half-season in 2021. It sounds like 10 more episodes will be released, bringing its total number to 75. The most recent episode was the Christmas special, "How Santa Stole Christmas," which aired in November. While it's sad to say goodbye to Uncle Scrooge, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, it sounds like another fan-favorite character will be returning as there are reports of a Darkwing Duck spinoff coming to Disney+.
Here's is the full statement from Youngberg and Angones.
