In an unexpected move, Paramount+ shockingly canceled Star Trek: Prodigy. Not only was the animated series renewed for a second season, but it was already in production.
Like many other streaming services, Paramount+ will be removed Star Trek: Prodigy from its content library, allowing for a tax write-off. Disney and Warner Bros. have done the same with their own underperforming series in recent weeks.
There is some good news to come out of this unfortunate announcement though. Post-production will continue on Season 2 as producer CBS Studios will shop both Season 1 and Season 2 to a new buyer. This means we hopefully haven't seen the last of this motley crew.
Star Trek: Prodigy was the franchise's first animated series to solely use 3D animation. Although the series was targeted toward a younger audience, even older Trekkies found enjoyment in it.
The first season scored an impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes with a respectable 76% audience score. The series was praised for its combination of both "action-packed" and "thought-provoking" moments, as well as its "slick look."
Developed by Emmy Award-winners Kevin and Dan Hageman ("Trollhunters" and "Ninjago") the CG-animated series STAR TREK: PRODIGY is the first "Star Trek" series aimed at younger audiences and will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered - a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise - but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.
Following the unfortunate news of its cancellation, Star Trek: Prodigy creators Dan and Kevin Hagemen took to social media to share their optimism for the future of the series as CBS shops it around.
Despite the cancellation of Star Trek: Prodigy, Paramount+ is still home to many wonderful Stark Trek series, including the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks, the hit series Star Trek Discovery (now in its final season) and its spin-off Strange New Worlds. There was also the recent announcements for a Star Trek: Section 31 movie and a young-adult show Star Trek: Academy.
