In a move that no one saw coming, Viacom CBS announced today that a deal had been struck with South Park creators and showrunners Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Not just any deal, however, this whopping whale of a package is worth nine hundred million dollars.
Yes, you read that correctly. The same people responsible for decades of Cartman, Kenny, Stan, and Kyle, have locked down one of the most expensive streaming and television deals in history. What's more, this particular deal is all about their labor of love itself - South Park.
The paycheck is for a six-year deal, allowing Parker and Stone to fund more South Park episodes on Comedy Central for another six seasons, or sixty more episodes, keeping the fun alive until 2027 at the earliest. Not only will this see the fruition of more stories in that universe, but it transcends the medium of cable television by aiming spin-off films at Paramount+.
Now, the duo isn't going to create just any films for Paramount+, but specifically South Park movies themselves. Not only will they be making movies for the streamer, but the deal includes a significant amount, with fourteen titles in the works, all existing in the expanding South Park universe.
Parker and Stone have done movies before, both live-action and animated. Longtime fans of the duo will remember their work like Orgasmo, Baseketball, Team America: World Police, and of course, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.
With the latter being the only South Park film to date, it seems unfathomable that the number will rise to an outstanding 15 titles. However, that's precisely what ViacomCBS and Paramount+ have in mind for the streamer, and that means no breaks in content for fans of Towelie and the gang for years to come.
What do you guys make of this deal? Regardless of your thoughts, be sure to share them in the usual spot and check out our exclusive chat with Towelie voice actor and South Park producer Vernon Chatman.
Season 34 of South Park is set to air on Comedy Central in 2022.
