Legendary Entertainment's Pacific Rim animated series will launch on Netflix next year, with the streaming giant placing an initial two-season order.
Based on the kaiju vs. mecha sci-fi action franchise, the Pacific Rim anime series will follow two siblings who pilot an abandomed Jaeger mech in an attempt to find their missing parents. Craig Kyl (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution) will serve as showrunners.
Legendary Entertainment's executive vice president of brand development and consumer products, Elie Dekel, confirmed the news at Project Anime this weekend. “[This is] one of the biggest budget anime series I’ve had the pleasure of working on, and I think that speaks to the commitment of Netflix and Legendary [to anime]” Dekel said of the series, which will be produced by Legendary in partnership with Tokyo's Polygon Pictures.
Pacific Rim is one of several anime series coming to Netflix as the streaming service attempts to expand its portfolio into the genre.
The Pacific Rim franchise has grossed over $700 million worldwide. The first film, directed by Guillermo del Toro, debuted in 2013 and hauled in $411.5 million worldwide. Its sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, followed in 2018 and brought in $290.9 million worldwid.
