Earlier this year, there were reports that Nickelodeon was nearing a deal for an animated Star Trek series aimed towards a younger audience. That project has officially been greenlit, as Nickelodeon confirmed the new animated series will be developed by Emmy Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters, Ninjago).
Nickelodeon confirmed that the original CG-animated series "follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation."
“‘Star Trek’s’ mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future,” said Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who previously teased that the animated project will offer a completely different perspect and tone from what we're used to with the franchise.. “Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing ‘Trek’ to a younger generation around the world.”
“‘Star Trek,’ Nickelodeon, and the state of animation are doing incredibly ambitious things as of late. We couldn’t be more excited to jump aboard,” added Dan and Kevin Hageman.
This project is the second animated Star Trek series in development, joining the more mature-oriented Star Trek: Lower Decks, which has a two-season order from CBS All Access. Beyond the animation world, there's Star Trek: Discovery, the untitled Patrick Stewart-led series, and a new series starring Michelle Yeoh that's based on "Section 31."
Nickelodeon has not announced when its new animated series will premiere.
