Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is up for an Oscar tonight, which is an astronomical achievement for a Comic Book Movie.
Although it does come as a surprise. many fans have praised the movie, with some even going so far to say it beats out both
Spider-Man 2 and
Spider-Man: Homecoming, which prior to the release of Miles' new film were widely perceived as the best Spider-Man movies among the list of those that have been released in the past 20 years.
Still, despite many people loving this film, it likely isn't known that the movie made history because it had to use groundbreaking animation technology in order to make the beautiful scenes happen with that art style that appears in the film. In an interview with CBC Kids News, Patrick O'Keefe, the Art Director of
Into The Spider-Verse, said that the film was required to use never-before seen animation techniques.
We couldn’t just rely on 3-D animation. We needed to rely on some of the old-school 2-D animation hand-drawn techniques.
O'Keefe said that in order to design scenes such as the one you see below where half is in and half is out of focus, the team had to find entirely new ways to design them so that the colors would layer and look like a comic book.
He also said that he believes the film reaches as many children as it does because it is told from the point of view of a child himself. Also, it seems he's just as surprised as the rest of the fans about The Oscars.
He's just a regular kid who's trying to discover himself. I could not have imagined being a part of anything this big.
