We have some great news for fans of Hyper Light Drifter, Heart Machine's 2D acvtion role-playing game, as the game's creator and lead developer — Axl Preston — has recently revealed that he's currently working on an animated series based on the game.
According to sources, Preston has teamed up with Adi Shankar — the producer for Netflix's acclaimed Castlevania and the upcoming Devil May Cry series — to figure out how to properly translate the source material and make it into a television show.
Preston has also revealed that him and Shankar want to keep the show's atmosphere as close to the game as possible; keeping in mind that a show is not as interactive as a video game is.
"The difference between a series and a game is vast in a lot of ways. Hyper Light as a game was pretty atmospheric and kind of overbearing at times. For a series, the question is: how do you sustain and keep your attention on a non-interactive run? Does it get really, really dark and serious? Does it have some levity?"
Another dilemma Preston and Shankar have stumbled upon, is the fact that they still don't know whether they want the series to feature dialogue, or of it's best to keep it silent without the Drifter interacting with anyone within the show.
"There’s still a question of how much dialogue we really have, if any. Could it be a more silent series or would we have voice acting? Considering Hyper Light was wordless, there’s an idea there of how much that would carry over to to a show."
Hyper Light Drifter may not be the first video game to get an animated series, but with Shankar producing and Preston overseeing the project himself, it is likely tht they'll end up delivering a quality show that both fans of the series and newcomers will be able to enjoy.
