At New York Comic Con, Warner Bros. Animation unveiled a first look teaser at their upcoming animated series
Harley Quinn, which will air on the DC Universe digital subscription service.
The newly-released teaser gives us our first glimpse of Kaley Cuoco (
The Big Bang Theory) as the voice of Gotham's criminal queenpin. While sharing an Arkham Asylum cell with Poison Ivy - voiced by Lake Bell - the two discuss the upcoming series, which Harley promises will make you "piss yourself." Poison Ivy is a little more cynical, suggesting fans will hate "because they hate everything."
The teaser for the show appears to be very self-aware, referencing FX's canceled
Deadpool cartoon along with Warner Bros.' penchant for making "super gritty and bleak and depressing" DC movies. Fret not, though, Harley assures that everyone in the show is going to have fun... or else.
This kind of meta-humor is similar to what we've seen in other DC animated shows like
Teen Titans Go!, yet it still feels like a refreshing break from the - yes, what Poison Ivy said is true - typical dark and gritty DC movie or show. The
Deadpool reference was a nice little jab as well, though a little painful for those of us who were excited about its potential. Thankfully, this teaser has proved that
Deadpool isn't the only one who can successfully break the fourth wall and poke fun at DC and Marvel's missteps.
Joining Cuoco and Bell in
Harley Quinn is a star-studded cast that includes Alan Tudyk (
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Ron Funches (
Powerless), JB Smoove (
Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jason Alexander (
Seinfeld), Wanda Sykes (
Black-ish), Giancarlo Esposito (
Breaking Bad), Natalie Morales (
Bojack Horseman), Jim Rash (
Mike Tyson Mysteries), Diedrich Bader (
Veep), Tony Hale (
Arrested Development), and Chris Meloni (
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit).
In an interesting take on the DC character,
Harley Quinn focuses on the fan-favorite character who
"finally has broken things off with the Joker once and for all and attempts to make it on her own as the criminal Queenpin of Gotham City."
The adult animated action-comedy follows Harley as she breaks things off with the Joker and attempts to make it on her own as the criminal "queenpin" of Gotham City. The comedy will also feature Poison Ivy and a cast of heroes and villains — old and new — from the DC universe.
Harley Quinn is expected to debut on DC Universe in 2019.
