Disenchantment wasn't met with the rave reception creator Matt Groening and his staff were probably hoping for, but Netflix at least sees some potential in those who helped develop the animated show. According to Deadline, Shion Takeuchi, a staff writer for the series, has signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to develop a new series and "other projects" exclusively for the streaming service. Netflix didn't detail what this new series would be, but based on Takeuchi's experience, it's likely an animated project.
Takeuchi
is credited as a staff writer for all ten episodes of
Disenchantment. She also spent time at Pixar in the Animation Department, where she worked as a story artist on
Monsters University and
Inside Out. She has also worked as a writer on a number of other successful animated shows including
The Regular Show (Cartoon Network),
Gravity Falls (Disney XD), for which she shared an Annie writing nomination, and
Lost in Oz (Amazon).
Shion Takeuchi may not be a household name, but in a
recent interview with Deadline, Netflix's VP of original content Cindy Holland made it clear that the company is also "looking for new and emerging talent" when evaluating deals. She may not be an A-lister yet, but writing a successful show on Netflix is certainly a way to get there.
