Since its debut in 1997,
South Park has been lauded for its dark, surreal humor and its satirical take on topical issues. With the show remaining as popular as ever, Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Viacom Inc. are expected to share between $450 and $500 million dollars once they sell the streaming rights.
Apparently, a half-dozen companies are very interested in adding
South Park to their streaming platforms. Peacock and HBO Max, in an effort to build their respective libraries before launching next year, are actively chasing
South Park, according to people in the know. Netflix has dropped out of the bidding. Apple Inc. will not participate because of the controversial nature of the show.
South Park has recently targeted the Chinese Communist Party and thus Apple doesn't want to be associated with content that could taint the brand in the Chinese market.
The results of the deal could be revealed as soon as this weekend. We'll keep you posted on any further developments.
