As a part of it's upcoming slate of original video offerings, Apple plans to include an animated movie, nearing a deal for the rights. They are in talks with an Ireland-Based, Oscar-nominated anination studio, called Cartoon Saloon, according to people familiar with the matter.
We don't know any details yet about the movie Apple is looking to release, but we do know that it has yet to be made and is more than a year from its ideal release. Apparently, Apple has been in talks to buy distribution rights for several countries, including the U.S.
It is said that the movie could possibly see a theatrical release since that is necessary for Academy Awards qualifications, but in truth, it is still unknown what the plan is for Apple to debut the movie and make it available for viewers. There are also other potential movies in the works in addition to the first film. Neither Cartoon Saloon nor Apple has any immediate comments.
It's obvious that Apple will be facing strict competition with the studios in the film and animation business currently, but with the amount of money they have to set up partnerships like Cartoon Saloon, the company could just nudge its way into the business anyways.
