Ever heard of the cartoon, VeggieTales? It was first brought to the forefront back in 1993 and has since become one of the most popular and long-running children cartoons.
The animation was created in a bid to cater to evangelistically children, and it consists of various talking vegetables re-enacting tales from the Bible. From what we’ve come to understand, the primary characters are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber; along with several other supporting casts.
Apparently, the villains of the show are vegetables of color, and as such, they are depicted in a stereotypical manner. The research came from Dr. Dreama G. Moon, a professor from California State University San Marcos.
Dr. Moon believes the cartoon is racist due to its alleged depiction of minorities as villains, some of which who are deemed as irredeemable.
They humanize vegetables using stereotypes shown in accents and racial indicators to identify people of color in the show. In fact, it was even found in the same study that many of the villains characterized by race were found to be irredeemable … “Veggie Tales” and other like-minded works have made good messages in the Bible dangerous.
Is this cartoon series racist?
We watched a few episodes on YouTube and came away with the impression that it’s not. At the same time, we’re not researchers, but we are sensible enough to tell if something is dangerous for children due to the content.
VeggieTales is not dangerous nor is it racist, well, as far as we can tell. Maybe we’ve missed a few things or just didn’t watch enough episodes, therefore, we’ll give Dr. Moon and her team the benefit of the doubt on this one.
As it stands, the political climate that is rocking the United States today is becoming quite ugly, and we’re not a fan of it, not one bit.
