The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Amazon has ordered an eight episode season of an animated Invincible series, based on Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, and Corey Walkers' popular comic series.
The animated show is described as an adult drama, following a teenager named Mark Grayson, whose father is the most powerful superhero in the world. Reaching the age of 17, Mark starts to develop powers of his own, and takes his first steps towards becoming his father's protege.
Universal had previously announced that they are working on a feature film based on the series, and apparently both will remain in-development - at least for the time being.
Simon Racioppa, of Teen Titans, is listed as the showrunner. Executive producers include: Kirkman, Racioppa, David Albert, and Catherine Winder.
Head of scripted genre programming at Amazon Studios, Sharon Yguado, had this to say about Kirkman's involvement:
Robert has an uncanny talent to predict the zeitgeist, and we are incredibly excited to see him break boundaries in an animated one-hour format.
In a world saturated with superhero fare, we trust Robert to subvert expectations while encapsulating a story filled with heart and adrenaline. We love his ambitious plan for the show and believe it will look like nothing else on television.
Kirkman was thrilled about his series continuing to evolve - here's what he had to say:
I couldn't be more proud of the series Cory Walker, Ryan Ottley and I did together for over 15 years. To know our characters will live on in multiple iterations in other media is almost too exciting to bear! What Amazon is allowing us to do in animated form is nothing short of ground-breaking, and I can't wait for our rabid fan base to experience it!
What do you think about Invincible becoming an animated series? Are you a fan or Kirkman's works?
