Now that it's out in theatres, we can definitively say whether or not the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie features an appearance by all manner of popular characters from throughout the franchise — namely and in this case: Knuckles the Echidna.
A TV spot was released prior to the movie's launch that seemed to feature the fan-favourite character or at least another anthropomorphic echidna.
Warning: SPOILERS for Sonic the Hedgehog beyond this point! The brief clip that featured in the TV spot was taken from the movie's opening in which the titular speedster is chased out of his own world and winds up on Earth — where he spends the following decade (via
Gamefragger).
It's a tribe of echidnas that is responsible for seemingly taking out Longclaw and causing Sonic the flee through a portal. Was Knuckles one of them? Well, that's tough to say but more than likely not. You would think Knuckles would be about the same age as Sonic (as he is in the video games) whereas the spear-wielding echidnas seemed to not be.
However, it does certainly seem to be a tease that Knuckles will feature in a future instalment —
along with another fan-favourite Sonic the Hedgehog character. So, that's definitely something to look forward to!
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
