Jeff Fowler, the director of Paramount's
Sonic The Hedgehog movie, recently took to social media (
@fowltown) to announce that the film's release date has been pushed back to next year.
The live-action movie was originally set to release on November 8th of this year, however, now it will arrive in theatres on
February 14th, 2020 (Valentine's Day).
Though the director confirmed the new release date for the film, he only hinted at the reason why. Though, if you've been following news about the film, it's pretty obvious. The first trailer for
Sonic The Hedgehog launched an immense amount of backlash against the character's redesign. He was totally unlike his former self, he was more muscular, humanoid, and even had human teeth.
The director
took to Twitter last month to reveal that the design would be redone on account of the negative response. This was a mostly well-received decision, however, some were worried that it meant animators would be massively overworked. Thankfully, with the date pushed back, it should allow the CGI artists a comfortable amount of time to do
Sonic justice.
Sonic the Hedgehog will now release in theatres on February 14th, 2019.
