A new look at The Little Mermaid has been revealed on a gorgeous magazine cover and with some revealing stills that offer a fresh look at Ariel, King Triton, Ursula, and more.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Rob Marshall confirmed reports that he met with singer and Eternals star Harry Styles about the role of Prince Eric.
"We met with him. He was lovely. What a wonderful guy," the filmmaker says. "But at the end of the day, he really felt like he wanted to go off and do the movies that he ended up doing, which were sort of darker."
"For a lot of young musical people like Harry, you're trying to carve your way and you don't wanna be seen as a singer, necessarily," he continues. "That's why he was really looking to do something not in the musical genre, to really stretch himself. It was really a fun idea to play with, but in the end, I always think things happen for a reason."
Jonah Hauer-King was ultimately cast as Eric, and Marshall has nothing but good things to say about his work. "I'm always looking for the person who's deeply connected to a part. The words come off the page [and] all of a sudden they're in his mouth, and it sounds true and real. You believe the person."
The movie also stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
The Little Mermaid opens exclusively in theaters on May 26, 2023.
