The Little Mermaid is easily among the most highly anticipated of Disney's upcoming live-action adaptations, no great surprise when you look at the cult following that 1989 animated classic has.
Earlier today, we shared our best look yet at aquatic supporting characters Sebastian and Flounder, and that's now been followed by an official poster. Clearly paying homage to a one-sheet for the movie this remake is based on, it's a gorgeous piece of imagery that puts Halle Bailey's Ariel front and centre.
Disney has also confirmed that the long-awaited full trailer for The Little Mermaid will premiere during this Sunday's Academy Awards. It helps that Disney owns ABC, of course, but the movie must be one they're banking on being a huge hit if it's going to be showcased during the Oscars.
Take a closer look at this poster for the movie below and check back here on Sunday for the new trailer.
In The Little Mermaid, the youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart.
She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
The movie stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
Helmed by visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid opens in theaters on May 26, 2023.
