Production Weekly has released a new listing of projects in development and a new film titled The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge has been announced. The movie is now entering production with principal photography at Paramount Animation.

The movie has not released details like its plot but it has been confirmed it will be a prequel with its setting taking place before the other movies in the franchise and even before the television series. According to MovieWeb, this will be an origin story taking place in Camp Coral.

The film will show the story of how SpongeBob met his friends: Patrick star and Sandy Squirrel. The movie is full CGI for underwater portions, it will later switch to live-action footage. The first movie in the franchise did something similar.

According to MovieWeb, the movie has a premiere date of July 17, 2020 but there is nothing officially confirmed. As soon as something official pops up, we will let you know.
