Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuted back in December 2018 and took the world by surprise by being absolutely phenomenal. The Sony Pictures Animation movie even went on to win the Academy Award for 'Best Animated Feature' among many more accolades such as an almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.
The film spun the Spider-Man mythos in a new and exciting way, proposing that there's a multiverse of webslingers out there; and the post-credits scene teased that what the film itself featured was just the tip of the iceberg. With such success, naturally, a sequel was confirmed and has been in the works for a while now.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson are on to direct with David Callaham, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller writing; the latter two returning from the first instalment. Speaking of reprisals, Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld are expected to return as Miles Morales, Peter B. Parker, and Gwen Stacy respectively, along with others — such as Oscar Isaac as Miguel O'Hara A.K.A. Spider-Man 2099 and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew A.K.A. Spider-Woman.
Though originally announced to premiere in April 2022, the COVID-19 pandemic set the film's debut back to October 7th, 2022; a little under a year from now. Spider-Man: No Way Home producer Amy Pascal recently spoke with Fandango for the upcoming release of the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe film wherein she teased that news of the animated sequel is forthcoming.
Asked about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, Pascal said the following: "It's going to be fantastic. We have something to show on that very soon." Exciting to be sure. Perhaps this could mean there's a full-blown trailer on the horizon. Regardless, stay tuned to Toonado as we will be sure to cover any and all Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 news as and when it drops.
