Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuted in theatres back in December 2018, and the animated movie quickly became one of the most beloved and acclaimed in recent memory. It holds an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and even went as far as to win the Academy Award in the "Best Animated Feature Film" category.
Lesser-known Marvel Comics characters, such as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, were catapulted into being household names. Speaking of Gwen Stacy, Hailee Steinfeld recently provided an update on the supposed Spider-Gwen spinoff from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — find out more about that here.
Fans of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be glad to know, and probably already do, that a proper sequel is in the works. It's currently scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 8th, 2022. Joaquim Dos Santos serves as director of a screenplay by Dave Callaham.
It's believed that the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel will not only continue to story of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, as Spider-Man and Spider-Woman respectively, but also introduce new web-slingers such as Spider-Man 2099 and Toei Spider-Man (who is more commonly referred to as "Japanese Spider-Man").
Nevertheless, animator Nick Kondo recently took to social media to reveal that he has begun work on the sequel. This seems to serve as confirmation that production has officially started. It's therefore good to know that Sony Pictures Animation hasn't been too significantly stifled by the whole COVID-19 situation.
Here's hoping they're still on track for the October 2022 release date, and the sequel won't have to be delayed yet again.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is set to arrive in theatres on October 8th, 2022.
