Soul is a new original movie from the creative geniuses over at Pixar Studios. When the film was
first announced in June, it only came with a logo and a vague but intriguing plot synopsis:
Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you … you? Soul takes you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions.
At D23 this weekend, we were finally treated to more details about the film, which journeys from the streets of New yOrk City to the cosmic realms and, specifically,
"The You Seminar." This otherworldly location serves as the place where we all discover our unique personalities.
It was revealed that Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx will be playing the lead — Joe Gardner, a middle school band director with a love of jazz and a dream of playing at the Half Note, New York's prestigious jazz club. A brief trailer was shown that sets up the premise of the film; Joe, who has nabbed the gig, is walking down the city when he falls into a manhole and dies; his soul separated from his body.
Joe's soul is taken to "The You Seminar," where he meets Tina Fey's character, 22, a soul-in training who has also spent a very, very long time in this fantastical place.
Together, the two will embark on a journey to return Joe to Earth, but on the way, it will "make him think about what it means to have a soul."
Rounding out the cast of
Soul are Ahmir Questlove Thompson as a drummer named Curly; Phylicia Rashad as Joe's mother Libba; and
Hamilton's Daveed Diggs as Joe's nemesis Paul.
It was also revealed that Jon Batiste is writing original jazz music for
Soul. Trent Rezno and Atticus Ross, the Oscar-winning duo behind
The Social Network, will also compose an original score.
Soul is set to arriv ein theaters on June 19, 2020.
