The live-action
Sonic the Hedgehog movie debuted in theatres almost a month ago — how time flies! Based on the iconic video game and character of the same name,
Sonic the Hedgehog serves as an origin story for the blue blur. Ben Schwartz serves as the voice of the titular speedster, Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, and Jeff Fowler serves as director.
On multiple occasions since the movie's release, Fowler has teased that there will be follow-ups to
Sonic the Hedgehog — largely due to the first instalment's success. The director even went as far as to say other popular
Sonic the Hedgehog characters, such as Knuckles and Tails, would be introduced in sequels —
more on that here.
Well, the plot has thickened as; James Marsden recently revealed that he's contractually obligated to return for multiple future instalments. Though the actor was admittedly vague, Marsden simply being signed on for more than one movie reveals that Paramount Pictures had and does intend to expand
Sonic the Hedgehog's cinematic legacy.
“I believe, I don’t know if I’m supposed to say. As many as they want to make," Marsden told
Variety.
"Yeah, that’s my somewhat vague answer. It is such a good group of people and it was so much fun to see Jim [Carrey] enjoying himself again. I think this was his second-biggest opening weekend of all of his movies. I was kind of amazed at that statistic. He just had a big smile on his face and he was hugging everyone. It just felt like it was such a cool thing.”
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
