The long-awaited, live-action
Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been in theatres now for two weeks. Ben Schwartz stars as the voice of the titular character alongside Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. The cast also includes James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski respectively.
Shortly after the movie's successful debut in theatres, director Jeff Fowler took to social media teasing that
"the future is bright." This could only be to do with future instalments. During a recent interview, Fowler revealed what a hypothetical sequel would introduce. The director first told
ComicBook.com (via
Gamefragger) why the first instalment didn't feature Knuckles the Echidna.
For this first film, we really were just looking at the 1991 game and just see where it all started and just keep it simple. Just try to nail Sonic and Robotnik and just set up their rivalry. There's a lot of great characters in the Sonic universe, but it's the most important thing is just to get Sonic set up and just tell a little bit of an origin story with him, and just do it in a way that really makes everyone fall in love with him as a character and just be rooting for more.
Basically, they wanted to make sure that
Sonic the Hedgehog and Eggman's rivalry was down and established before introducing additional characters such as the fan-favourite. However, Fowler followed that up by teasing that Sonic's friends will probably be introduced in future instalments.
"And then, if all that goes well, then we can kind of open it up and bring in some of these other characters that fans know and love. And yeah, I mean, no one's more excited than me to have that opportunity." All has certainly gone well what with the live-action movie recently surpassing the $200 million mark at the box office —
more on that here.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
