The Domee Shi-directed Pixar short has won tonight's coveted best animated short Oscar, which follows the story of an aging Chinese mother who suffers empty-nest syndrome, and gets a renewed chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings comes to life. Shi is the first woman to direct an animated short in Pixar history, and Bao is her directorial debut.
Bao is the fifth Pixar project to win the animated short category, the others being Tin Toy (1988), Geri's Game (1997), For the Birds (2001) and Piper (2016).
Shi is presently developing a full-length feature film for Pixar, which is due in 2022.
