Ming-Na Wen provided the voice of the title character in the 1998 animated film, Mulan, its direct-to-video sequel Mulan II, and the character's appearance in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. She arguably looks young enough to portray the character in Disney's upcoming live-action film. At the very least, it seems a missed opportunity that Wen doesn't have a role in the project.
Liu Yifei will portray the title character this time around, with supporting roles going to Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Gong Li.
So does the live-action remake have Wen's blessing?
"
I think Disney is going to do a great job with the live action Mulan. I love what I’ve seen: little bits of Liu Yifei. She’s a great choice to be Mulan.
I meet a lot of fans, and I see it online all the time, so I feel like Mulan is with me now more prevalent on a daily basis more than it ever was before."
But Ming-Na doesn't exactly have to pass the torch to Yifei just yet. She'll get to voice Mulan at least one more time, as she'll be heard as the warrior woman in the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph sequel.
