A couple of days ago, a rumour was launched that actor Nicolas Cage had been cast as the voice of a fan-favourite Spider-Man variant in Sony's upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. This rumoured casting has now been officially cemented.

Collider recently confirmed that Cage has indeed been cast as Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming and highly anticipated superhero flick. The Noir multiversal variant of Spidey is an infinitely darker, steampunk-inspired iteration, whose popular series takes place during the Great Depression.

Here's how Collider describe Noir's portion of the multiverse in the film:

In this reality, Peter Parker is an inexperienced yet idealistic apprentice of a respected yet troubled reporter, who is accidentally bitten by a illegally imported and highly venomous spider, while secretly investigating a smuggling ring of ancient spider statues, but instead of killing him, the incident imbues him with super-human abilities, similar to that of a spider. Using advantage of his new abilities, Parker begins to wage a one-man war against the criminal underworld in New York City as a brutal and feared vigilante, known as the “Spider-Man”, partly to avenge the death of his uncle: Ben Parker, at the hands of the city’s major crime lord: Norman Osborn.

This isn't Cage's first venture into voice acting for a superhero animated film as he's set to make his debut as Superman in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies - which releases later this month. And neither is it the actor's first superheroic run-in with Sony Pictures as he's famously known for playing the lead role in Ghost Rider and its sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

At the moment it's unknown how big Cage's role will be. With an assumed plethora of Spider-Man variants, including Hailee Steinfeld's portrayal of Spider-Gwen, he probably won't have a huge role, but still, Cage as a badass Spidey variation is something we can all agree sounds pretty intriguing - no matter the size of his role.

What do you think about Cage being confirmed as Spider-Man Noir? Are you looking forward to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse?

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse arrives in theatres on December 14th.
