Jon Favreau's live-action take on The Lion King was a technological marvel, but it came under fire for basically being a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 animated classic.
Despite that, it was still a box office hit and Disney is now looking to do something new with the franchise. Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) is stepping behind the camera to helm Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel that - as the title suggests - tells the story of both that character and Scar years before we originally first met them.
Aaron Pierre will play Mufasa, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been tapped to lend his voice to Scar, a lion known as Taka before he sported that distinctive mark across his face.
Now, Harrison Jr. has shared some insights into what fans of The Lion King can expect from his take on the classic Disney villain.
"We’re going to get to really get a backstory to Scar and he is hilarious," the actor says. "He is still very, very spicy. He is also the sweetest, the sweetest young lion you also ever meet, too. So it’s going to be fun seeing the relationship between Scar and Mufasa. So that’s what I can say."
Something huge must have happened for Scar to hate his brother enough to murder him and try to kill his son, so it will be fascinating to learn more about their childhood and the years which followed.
Scar's backstory is arguably even more compelling than that of Mufasa, so don't be surprised if he steals the show here. Either way, we're definitely intrigued to see how this story plays out and informs what we know about The Lion King.
