Following audience and critical praise after her starring role in the recent A Star Is Born film, it seems that Disney may be looking to cast Lady Gaga in their upcoming remake of 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid.
According to a new report from Disinsider, multiple sources have relayed that the popular singer-songwriter is up for a role - most likely that of the film's villain Ursula. Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Smallfoot) has long been rumored to be up for the titular role of Ariel - and the actress did make it clear that she's open to it.
The live-action retelling of The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall and feature songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, songwriter for Moana and Mary Poppins Returns, as well as Alan Menken's songs which featured in the original animated film. Given that Lady Gaga is most prominently a singer, and a talented one at that, the rumour is certainly plausible.
The Little Mermaid is one of many upcoming live-action adaptations of Disney classics, others include: Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Aladdin (which recently got its first teaser), The Sword In The Stone, Dumbo, and many more.
What do you think of this rumor? Would you like to see Lady Gaga as Ursula in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid?
Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid doesn't currently have a set release date.
