After being pushed up a few days, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially hit theaters today. The highly anticipated adaptation of the beloved Nintendo IP hasn't exactly been a hit with critics, but the movie is still expected to have one of the largest openings of the year. So where can you watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

As of right now, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is only playing in theaters. It's not currently streaming on any service and likely won't be for a few months at least. This means the only way to watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie right now is in theaters, so check your local listings.

No announcement has been made regarding The Super Mario Bros. Movie's streaming release, but since it's a Universal film, we already know it will eventually head to Peacock rather than Netflix, HBO Max, or Disney+. The question is when?

A deal between Universal and Peacock requires new movies to be released on streaming no later than four months after their theatrical debuts. But that doesn't mean it can't happen sooner. Universal's two recent movies, Knock at the Cabin and M3GAN, both came to Peacock 49 days after their theatrical debuts. This could put The Super Mario Bros. Movie's release on Peacock anywhere from as early as May 24th to as late as August 5th. In all likelihood, it probably depends on how the film performs at the box office.

Early estimates call for a $225 million-plus opening, which would make it one of the best global openings of the year. If The Super Mario Bros. Movie has legs, then it’s quite possible Universal could opt to keep it in theaters longer. But if the box office numbers start to dwindle after opening weekend, then perhaps it comes to streaming a bit sooner.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is based on Nintendo’s long-running and beloved Mario IP. While not a direct adaptation of any specific game, the film features plenty of nods and references to the franchise as a whole.

“Based on the world of Nintendo’s Mario games, the film invites audiences into a vibrant, thrilling new universe unlike any created before in an action-packed, exuberant cinematic comedy event.

While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan-Michael Key; The Lion King) and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy; The Queen’s Gambit), Mario taps into his own power.”

The movie was produced by Illumination -- creators of the popular Despicable Me and Minions franchises -- along with Nintendo and Universal Pictures. It was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jeleni from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel.
