Aside from a brief teaser, not much is known about
Frozen 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Walt Disney Animation's hit 2013 CGI-animated film. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month, star Idina Menzel, who plays the Elsa, offered us a bit of a general overview in terms of the type of movie it will be.
“It's a real girl power, badass kind of superhero type of movie. They're really strong, the two sisters, and it's exciting. The music is beautiful,” Menzel said of the film.
2013's
Frozen was all about Elsa fully embracing her ice powers, but also shared a beautiful story about the strong bond between two sisters. It's unclear how the sequel will expand upon that story, but the teaser showed Elsa stranded on an island and attempted to escape by using her ice powers.
Menzel actually compared the character of Elsa to that of Elphaba from the hit broadway show Wicked. “Elsa, Elphaba, they're young women that are afraid of their incredible power and then learn a way to harness that,” Menzel added. During the event, which honored
Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz, Menzel thanked him for embracing
“the power and beauty of fierce, incredible women…not apologizing for who you are, especially in this time we’re in.”
While plot details for
Frozen 2 are a mystery, it sounds like we can expect another movie in which Elsa and Anna can express their individuality and braveness, and just be themselves.
Frozen 2 arrives in theaters on November 22, 2019.
