Last week, Disney released a second trailer for Frozen 2, offering us more context for the upcoming animated sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios. As revealed in the trailer, Frozen 2 will follow Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf on their next adventure as they head North to discover the truth about their past and why Elsa was born with magical powers.

At Annecy Animation Festival 2019, this brief synopsis was expanded upon with new footage and descriptions from Disney's head of animation, Becky Bresee, and head of effects, Marlon West.

“It's an evolution and an expansion of the story of Frozen, and many of the questions raised in the first movie become the mysteries that our gang are trying to solve in this film,” said Bresee, who reiterated that the main question of this film revolves around: “Why was Elsa born with her powers?”

“[It's] about two sisters trying to stay together while the world tries to tear them apart,”
added West.

Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter recalled the various scenes and clips that were shown during the presentation. The movie will reportedly kick off similar to the first, taking us back to when Elsa and Anna were still young girls. In the flashback, their father is telling them a bedtime storyabout an enchanted elemental forest. Something went wrong during his visit there and he was forced return to Arendelle. Ever since, there has been a disconnected between the people of the town and the elements: air, fire, water, and Earth.

The first clip that was shown featured Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven playing a game of charades. This seems like a lighthearted moment as Olaf transforms himself into various forms to allow Kristoff to easily guess what he's acting out. However, when it's Elsa's turn, she becomes distracting by a haunting voice that only she can here. The scene ends with her excusing herself form the game to retreat to her room to be alone.

Although the scene ended, West and Bresee continued to provide explanation for what happens next. Anna checks on Elsa and the two fall asleep. Elsa is again awoken by the mysterious voice and, as it was revealed in the trailer, she heads outside and casts a spell unlike ever she has done before — ice crystals covered in runes blast into the sky over Arendelle.

A second scene was also shown, expanding upon what was shown briefly in the trailer. It featured Elsa diving into the dark waters of the roaring ocean where she clashes in a magical battle against a horse-shaped water spirit.

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she'll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough.

The mystery will unfold when Frozen 2 hits theaters on November 22, 2019.
