After
passing Frozen last week to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Disney's The Lion King has reached another milestone.
With $1.351B earned at the box office, the Jon Favreau-directed live-action remake of Disney's animated classic has now cracked the top ten highest-grossing films worldwide. It passed Marvel's
Black Panther ($1.346.9B) to take the No. 10 spot.
Having been out for about a month now, it's unclear how much further
The Lion King can climb on the list, but it seems to have a decent shot at passing
Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405B) in the No. 9 spot.
The Lion King's worldwide box office total is split 36.1% domestic and 63.9% foreign, with $487.4 million stateside and the remaining $863.8 million hauled in overseas.
The Lion King is currently the second highest-grossing movie of 2019, behind only
Avengers: Endgame ($2.795.6B). Disney is responsible for five of the top six highest-grossing movies this year, including
Captain Marvel,
Aladdin, and
Toy Story 4. Even
Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is a Sony movie, was made by the Disney-owned Marvel Studios.
Director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.
