In March 2020, Disney will release yet another live-action remake of one of their beloved animated classics. This time
Mulan is the film in question. While many of Disney's remakes have been criticised for being too similar to their source material; a recent report by
The DisInsider has revealed that the remake of
Mulan will be taking some hefty creative liberties.
It's said that Mulan's companion and dragon by the name of Mushu will be replaced by a phoenix. An odd but fitting choice given the two mythical creatures' similarities. We can only assume that the new version of the character will be somewhat anthropomorphized and therefore be able to speak - in the same way that the original version of Mushu was voiced by Eddie Murphy.
Another dire change is in regards to the iconic songs that featured in the renowned animated film.
Mulan features such classics as "I'll Make A Man Out Of You," and "Reflection." Well, it turns out that the live-action remake will essentially be ditching the musical aspect entirely. The film's cast won't be singing any of these songs in the film, instead the songs will supposedly feature entirely as intrumentals.
This is by no means official confirmation, however, The DisInsider are pretty reputable and the latter revelation does line up with comments by the remake's director made back in 2017:
“From what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.”
Disney's live-action remake of
Mulan will be directed by Niki Caro and star Liu Yifei, Yoson An, Jason Scott Lee, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, Chum Ehelepola, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and Gong Li.
Mulan is set to arrive in theatres on March 27th, 2020.
