Pokémon: Detective Pikachu debuted in theatres a couple of weeks back and served as the first instalment in Legendary's live-action Pokémon cinematic universe. The film stars Ryan Reynolds and  Justice Smith as Detective Pikachu and Tim Goodman respectively. As a team, the duo aim to find out what happened to the Tim's missing father and Pikachu's missing detective partner.

Even though you might think Detective Pikachu would be but a minor story in the grand scheme of the Pokémon universe, it features at least one major player: Mewtwo. The omniscient, legendary Pokémon creature is all-knowing and thereby entirely aware of the past, present, and future. With its godlike abilities, Mewtwo plays a very major role in Detective Pikachu.

Benji Samit, one of the screenwriters of Detective Pikachu, recently guested on one of Comicbook.com's podcasts - by the name of: A Wild Podcast Has Appeared. There, Samit discussed the inclusion of Mewtwo and writing dialogue for the omniscient character:

"Well, I think that Mewtwo is such an interesting and complicated character that we wanted to capture an etherealness to that, to his voice and to its point of view. This is a Pokemon that has more knowledge than maybe almost anything else on the planet. It's just experienced a lot. It's power is off the chart," Samit continues:

So we felt like there was, I don't want to say it's an attachment, but there is sort of like a prescience of understanding that Mewtwo possesses and we felt like when we were writing Mewtwo's dialogue that had to be present in his dialogue, that Mewtwo has seen the past and the present and the future, that sort of jumble and understands more than our characters do. It has the ability to do things our characters can't. So that was sort of the thought process when we were writing Mewtwo.

Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.
