We are less than a week away from the premiere of the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe title. The first three episodes of What If...? will all be available on Disney+ as soon as Wednesday.
What If...? is the first animated project from Marvel Studios, and it has been confirmed to be canon, so it is just as important as Loki, WandaVision, and the rest. Still, many people have a stigma against the animation medium. Marvel has done their best to combat that ahead of time by assembling over fifty actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to return and voice their characters.
With Chadwick Boseman involved and the last performance by the late Black Panther thespian, the rest of the cast is menial at best. However, despite nabbing nearly every performer in the Infinity Saga, a few people didn't show up to the party.
Those that won't be heard in What If...? include Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Tom Holland, Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth Olsen, and Gwyneth Paltrow. In a recent interview with Uproxx, director Bryan Andrews addressed why that is and the complications of coordinating schedules, stating the following.
"A lot of it is it’s like herding cats. All of these people are extremely talented, and they’ve got a lot of stuff going on. And we figured we probably wouldn’t be able to get everybody, just because scheduling is so difficult. But we got a lot, and that was great. So yeah, it’d be awesome to have everybody, but you’ve got to deal with what you’ve got to deal with.
And if someone’s too busy and they can’t make it, it’s a bummer. We pivot, and we get someone in that can rally and play to the spirit of that character. Not necessarily do “an impression,” but at least try to embody that and then make it a little bit their own, but hopefully not bug the audience too much."
