In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the timeline begins with Captain America: The First Avenger, with the movie's title literally spelling out why that is. Captain America was the spark that caused many other dominoes to fall into place, and it looks like the same thing is happening with What If...?
A sneak peek was revealed today alongside their interview with the creatives behind the series, and much of the focus was on Agent Captain Margaret "Peggy" Carter. The entire sneak peek focused on the fact that she is replacing Steve in this new universe with The Watcher narrating, "What if Captain Carter was the First Avenger?"
What If...? head writer A.C. Bradley stated to EW that "She's such a powerhouse of a woman. With Captain Carter, it was our way of taking one of the most popular and known moments in the MCU, which is The First Avenger, the rise of Steve Rogers and Captain America, and really going for the heart of the MCU and giving it a big twist, and also making a statement of 'This is going to be a female-led adventure, and we're going to see how this would ripple across history.' It's a fun, swashbuckling story."
This is interesting because it seems like this will now be more than just a question. Instead, we may see other effects in the What If...? series that spin out differently since a British woman was the First Avenger instead of an American white male.
