Cancel culture has had a huge effect on countless stories from the past that were told when there was less awareness or acceptance of the lack of diversity and sexism in storytelling. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the changes, they are being made with empathy for those who are offended by the context.
This has affected all mediums of storytelling, including comics, television shows, films, animation, and just about everything else that portrays inaccurate or insensitive elements, scenes, or plot points.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is the most recent target, with the popular ride having been updated with a different ending - one that includes Prince Charming's non-consensual kiss instead of the witch's defeat. Disney Imagineer Jim Shull, however, has jumped to the defense of the ride.
Shull makes the point that while cultural changes have taken place in the years since the story was initially told, the ride is accurate based on the context of the film. He also praises the team behind the ride, and you can read it all for yourself in his tweet below.
What do you guys think? Is Shull in the wrong by jumping to defend the team, or do you think cancel culture was going a bit too far with this one? Whatever you make of it, be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot!
